Recently one of my students related her exasperation about trying to get a bus late at night, a dilemma which women across the nation face daily. Cuts in public bus service and the generally car-dominated nature of Whatcom County presumably make the provision of late night buses prohibitive. Yet access to safe, affordable public transportation is a necessity for working women of all classes, who bear the burden of child care, as well as for obtaining social services for their families. -- Sikivu Hutchinson
